GOLDEN TRIANGLE
TRIBES & REFUGEES
NORTHERN THAILAND (1986) 2024

For hundreds of years tribes have followed the great rivers and valleys from Tibet and China down to today's Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The Hmong, Kayan, Palong, Shan, Lahu and Lisu people hold Buddhist, Christian and Animist faiths, each with their own distinct cultures, style of dress and languages. In northern Thailand these tribes live and farm in neighboring communities, tolerant of each other but with unshakeable belief in their own distinct identities.  Many have fled persecution and civil war in Myanmar living as 'alien' stateless refugees in Thailand.  They are  industrious farmers growing a wide range of produce for Chiang Mai and Bangkok markets.  Roads electricity and the internet are transforming  their lives.
